Situated in the quiet, rural Hawaiian Paradise Park neighborhood, the home beautifully accommodates six guests. Hilo Shangrila's airy, inviting living room and well-equipped kitchen feature soaring ceilings and a wall of glass doors to maximize ocean views and indoor-outdoor living. The home also boasts a dining space for six in full view of the ocean, an office space and additional sitting area, and a laundry area. The master bedroom at Hilo Shangrila offers more vaulted ceilings, a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, and an ensuite bath with a walk-in shower. The welcoming guest bedroom also has high ceilings and a queen-size bed, as well as its own full bath just steps away, with a large tub and shower. The third sleeping area is adjacent to the master bedroom and has a pull out sofa. The saltwater swimming pool has a breathtaking view of the brilliant blue Pacific. Its surrounding lanai provides the opportunity to soak up the warm Hawaiian sun or lounge in the shade. A covered hot tub is the perfect setting for enjoying cooler evenings, and a gas barbecue grill creates another option for meals at home. This Puna-area home on the Big Island's east side allows easy access to attractions such as black-sand Kehena Beach, Pohoiki (aka Isaac Hale) Beach Park, and the Na Ala Hele hiking trail. In nearby Pahoa town, guests will find excellent seafood, Italian, Mexican and Filipino restaurants, along with a 50's-style coffee shop and a natural foods market. At the farmers' markets, take advantage of the opportunity to sample unusual local fruits (like passion fruit, star fruit, lychee, mango, and papaya); feast on a homemade crepe with bananas, chocolate and cream; try some homemade Thai noodles or salads; find a unique, hand-crafted piece from a Big Island artist; enjoy a soothing professional massage; or experience authentic Hawaiian music. 6. CANCELLATION POLICY (not applicable to Hale Kai Suites. See section f, below): To offer you the best services possible, we strictly adhere to our cancellation policy. Guest shall inform Agent in writing of Guest’s intention to cancel the reservation. (For reservations made through third parties, additional cancellation policies may apply.) The cancellation policy is as follows:
a. If Cancellation notice is received thirty or more days (30+) prior to the check-in date, a cancellation fee of $75.00 will be retained and the balance will be refunded within 7 days from receipt of written cancellation.
b. If Cancellation notice is received less than thirty days but at least fifteen days (15-29) prior to the check-in date, fifty percent (50%) of the booking amount of rent and taxes will be forfeited. Half of the rent, tax, security deposit or damage waiver and any pre-collected cleaning fees will be refunded within 7 days from receipt of written cancellation.
c. NO REFUNDS if cancelled within 14 days of arrival (0 – 14). As a courtesy to our Guest, if Agent can rebook any portion of the canceled reservation, Guest will be refunded to the extent that Agent is able to re-book the Property.
d. This loss can be avoided if Travel Protection Insurance was purchased and the reason for cancelation is covered under the travel insurance policy. All reservation changes must be acknowledged in writing.
e. Owner/Agent Cancellation Policy: In the unlikely event that the Property becomes unavailable for any part of the tenancy for reasons beyond the control of the Agent, including but not limited to the sale of the property, Owner and/or Agent may cancel this Agreement and refund in full to the Guest all payments made. Agent will assist in procuring similar alternative accommodation should this situation arise. Guest agrees that any claims against Owner/Agent arising out of performance or
non-performance under this agreement shall be limited to a full refund of all consideration previously tendered by Guest.
f. Hale Kai Suites Cancellation Policy: The guest may cancel free of charge up to 14 days prior to arrival. The guest will be charged 50% of the total price if they cancel in the 14 days before arrival. No $75 cancellation fee charged on Hale Kai Suites cancellations.

The Hilo Shangrila was an amazing location. Getting up each day to have a cup of coffee outside, many times standing on the other side of the pool to watch the waves and take in the breathtaking sights. We were pleased to find that both bedrooms had air conditioning as the rooms get a little stuffy without. Overall, we loved the location and being something opposite of a resort environment (offering privacy and a true local experience). While we were there we saw a humpback whale, a family of dolphins and a family of sea turtles who were always present in the water below. This is an amazing location. The following maintenance issues were sent to the Concierge on Wednesday 7/19/2023: The door and window in the dining room were "frozen shut". (Confirmed by Gary) With no circulating air and no AC in that room we could not dine there comfortably. The oven was very dirty and some pans underneath were dirty/rusted and unusable (Confirmed by Gary with photos.) Some knives and utensils had rust on them. One of the microwave oven lights is out. Gas from the grill lite once but wouldn’t light again. The second tank is rusted all over and does not look safe. The metal grill cover is loose and falling off. (No one came to assist in repairs). We had to fry our fish rather than grill it. The hot water knob in the main shower is loose and ready to fall off. The LG remote control for the AC in the master bedroom does not work. We were expecting a 5 star experience but our experience was far less than that. It would be appropriate to receive a partial refund as we did not get what we paid for." Refrigerator died in the first 24-hrs after we arrived. We notified the management team, but it took more than 24-hrs for a replacement, causing the loss of food that we had purchased. We were reimbursed for the loss of food and given $18 for the inconvenience, but not reimbursed for having to eat out during this time. Vrbo was of no use at all with the issue. It started to feel more like I was doing a job with how much notifying to the property manager we were having to do. The grill was crumbling apart at the legs due to salt water deterioration. Which isn’t anyone’s fault however it nearly fell on my husband while we were grilling our food! Luckily he didn’t get burned but we have a small child and all in all it was a hazard. Not to mention accident waiting to happen! They definitely knew of the issue as there were man made stickers on it identifying warranty and other things! We had no hot water for over 24 hours or water pressure! The cable did not work the entire time of our stay which was hard with a young child and none stop rain. Nobody came to fix this issue either even after ample messages asking for assistance and updates. Come to find out after following ALL the instructions given the guests prior to us had disconnected cables so nothing could work! I was able to take pictures to show the property manager however nobody came to assist us. We at one point we’re thinking we would just leave and go rent a place at a resort but it just seemed like a hassle, waste of money! The outdoor pool and view of ocean were great. House is okay, very dated and smelled of urine in the pantry. It’s hard to keep things dry in that area, I do understand that. However it was not a relaxing stay. Constant things not working from lights to the water issue. They did come fix the water however it still was not heating up or getting pressure. Then my husband found a hose outside just running! Started flooding the driveway and we were able to turn it off then everything seemed to work correctly! Again, was like a job.
