Located in the Kaloli Point sun belt on the East side of the Big Island of Hawai, House of Paddles is within earshot of the Pacific Ocean’s crashing waves. This private tropical oasis is a two-minute walk from the spectacular Puna coastline to watch sea turtles and whales (when in season)! Please Note: This is a quiet residential neighborhood and local ordinances prohibit gatherings at licensed short term rental properties. Quiet hours are 9pm to 8am daily. Occupancy is set to 7 guests only. Please Respect Your Neighbors! Stunning custom-built in 2005, House of Paddles features an open floor plan with vaulted ceilings. Throughout the home are exotic local hardwoods and Mexican tile. The fully equipped kitchen features custom Native Koa hardwood and Mango cabinets and a six burner gas stove with griddle. French doors open the Grand Room to a private tropical resort-style pool area with a propane grill. Observe beautiful sunrises and magical stargazing from the pool area. There are three bedrooms and one additional sleeping area. The private Orchid Suite is separate from the main house and boasts an ensuite bathroom with private lava rock outdoor shower. Two more bedrooms are in the main part of the house. Bedroom 2 shares a full bathroom across the hall and Bedroom 3 has an ensuite bathroom. The final sleeping area is a comfortable queen size bed in our large laundry room. House of Paddles is conveniently located 25 minutes from Hilo International Airport. Only 30 minutes to many must see attractions including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, snorkeling beaches in Hilo, the newly renovated Poho’iki Beach Park in Kalapana and many natural wonders. Just 15 minutes to quaint Pahoa Town for fine dining, art boutiques and groceries. Only 8 minutes to Maku’u Farmer’s Market on Sundays. This is a Hawaii County licensed short term rental. 6. CANCELLATION POLICY (not applicable to Hale Kai Suites. See section f, below): To offer you the best services possible, we strictly adhere to our cancellation policy. Guest shall inform Agent in writing of Guest’s intention to cancel the reservation. (For reservations made through third parties, additional cancellation policies may apply.) The cancellation policy is as follows:
a. If Cancellation notice is received thirty or more days (30+) prior to the check-in date, a cancellation fee of $75.00 will be retained and the balance will be refunded within 7 days from receipt of written cancellation.
b. If Cancellation notice is received less than thirty days but at least fifteen days (15-29) prior to the check-in date, fifty percent (50%) of the booking amount of rent and taxes will be forfeited. Half of the rent, tax, security deposit or damage waiver and any pre-collected cleaning fees will be refunded within 7 days from receipt of written cancellation.
c. NO REFUNDS if cancelled within 14 days of arrival (0 – 14). As a courtesy to our Guest, if Agent can rebook any portion of the canceled reservation, Guest will be refunded to the extent that Agent is able to re-book the Property.
d. This loss can be avoided if Travel Protection Insurance was purchased and the reason for cancelation is covered under the travel insurance policy. All reservation changes must be acknowledged in writing.
e. Owner/Agent Cancellation Policy: In the unlikely event that the Property becomes unavailable for any part of the tenancy for reasons beyond the control of the Agent, including but not limited to the sale of the property, Owner and/or Agent may cancel this Agreement and refund in full to the Guest all payments made. Agent will assist in procuring similar alternative accommodation should this situation arise. Guest agrees that any claims against Owner/Agent arising out of performance or
non-performance under this agreement shall be limited to a full refund of all consideration previously tendered by Guest.
f. Hale Kai Suites Cancellation Policy: The guest may cancel free of charge up to 14 days prior to arrival. The guest will be charged 50% of the total price if they cancel in the 14 days before arrival. No $75 cancellation fee charged on Hale Kai Suites cancellations.

I would say that it is a little “bare bones” when it comes to extra linens and cookware. When they say bring in everything you need to cook, they aren’t kidding. Some very basic things are missing from the kitchen (cooking sheets, salt) towels are limited to one set per guest. They were very helpful in bringing extra towels when called. The pool was very clean and my family enjoyed the back patio and pool area. We stayed in two houses, first the house of paddles and then the house of shangrilo. Both houses are great but if I would have to chose again I would always chose the house of shangrilo. The pool and the view are just breathtaking. Maybe just one thing, the smaller bed in the house of paddles is quite old and creaks a lot if you move, especially if two people sleep in it. The location is in a quiet neighborhood that is a great central location to Hilo one way or Volcano Park the other way. We had lots of exploring time while staying here. This home made the second place we stayed at in Kona seem like a slum (and it was nice too). We didn't read the instruction book well when we first got there so we missed the part about keeping food scraps in the freezer to keep bugs from getting in the trash but after we saw it, dug our food scraps out, and knew what we were doing, it was all good. Maybe a little note in the kitchen about that would be a good reminder for future guests who get too caught up in the magic of Hawaii to follow directions straight away. New construction on the poolside of the home will allow direct view of the pool from the second floor, removing much of the privacy of the pool and lanai.
