Welcome to Hale Malama Pono, a temporary home base for you to enjoy what Hawaii has to offer you as a visitor while treading as lightly as you can. Your hosts are long time visitors to the Island and now new owners. This home away from home is named for the values that they hope infuse it: preserving and protecting (the earth) with integrity. The Hawaiian words have layers of meaning, and the phrase is also commonly used to mean “Take care of yourself.”
Hale Malama Pono offers all the wonderful qualities of the Kona-Keauhou Surf and Racquet Club: warm tropical breezes, lush landscaping, a great pool and pickle ball/tennis courts, standard internet access for the complex, cable TV from a brand new 42" TV installed, 9, convenient BBQs, and proximity to fascinating historical archeological sites. It sits on Ali’i Drive with a 7-mile ocean-front urban walking “trail” at the front gate, and is within walking distance to shopping, golfing, farmers’ markets, snorkeling, surfing and more. Beach equipment like boogie boards, ice chest, beach towels, beach chairs and beach mats are here for your use. Plus a couple yoga mats. tennis equipment, pickleball, badminton and pingpong
As an end unit, all the rooms, including the bathrooms have natural light and ventilation. When additional light is needed at night, it will come from LEDs. When less warmth is desired, indoor and outdoor shades filter the sun, and fans provide a cooling breeze. We’re opting not to install A/C. USB ports on the bedroom clocks make phones and tablets charging easy. If you are combining work with vacation, two desks facing the ocean and hi-speed internet will support you.
To honor the 'aina, the land which feeds us, we don’t strive for high-end luxury and newness, but we do strive for clean, comfortable and functional. The condo is stocked with earth-friendly personal care and cleaning products, enough to last your entire stay. The hosts don’t claim to be 100% chemical free, but aim to be as close as possible. A small closet is designated as a recycling area to support your efforts to avoid landfill. A growing inventory of re-usable alternatives like cloth napkins, re-usable shopping bags, and refillable water bottles are here for your use. In order to avoid single use products, and for those who cook in, there’s a full complement of spices, herbs and condiments, and helpful small appliances.
For a casual exposure to things Hawaiian, there’s a growing library of tour books, fiction and jigsaw puzzles. For delving deeper, there are books and booklets about Hawaiian history, flowers, birds, fish, petroglyphs and more.
The condo is furnished and organized to help you unpack quickly, make yourselves at home, and get right to the fun and relaxation of Hawaii.
Whether from beaches and viewpoints around the Island, or the lanai at Hale Malama Pono, gaze at the gleaming turquoise ocean, spraying white as it crashes against the black lava, and see a different, beautiful sunset every night.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellations made ninety (90) days or more prior to arrival shall not be responsible for the final balance of the reservation. The $200 deposit made at the time of booking is non refundable after the booking is made. Cancellations of less than ninety (90) days prior to arrival shall forfeit the entire rent and excise tax (less cleaning fees) unless we are able to re-rent the property. Refunds on any forfeiture will be issued the dollar value the unit is re-rented for during the same dates as the canceled reservation. There is no refund for early departure or no shows.

"Great Getaway. Away from the Crowds!
This was a great location. Right on the ocean. Loved the first floor, walk right out to enjoy. Really enjoyed all the amenities that came along with this unit. There were quite a few things in the pantry to help with meals. Having a washer and dryer is a game changer. Pack light and go enjoy! There is not air conditioning, but having the windows open, supplied fans and ocean breezes make it comfortable."

"Ok for lodging very close to the ocean
3-101 was the second unit we stayed in during our two weeks at Keauhou Kona Surf & Racquet. The unit was good for one couple, and probably a couple of children. I think having two couples would have been awkward.
We didn’t have much of an issue not having air conditioning. It was March and there was a nice breeze from the ocean through the unit out to the front. But, if you want to close the hall door separating the two sleeping areas, there would be little air flow to the back bedroom.
The kitchen was well stocked with staples and cooking gear. We liked having the air fryer to help reduce the evening heat in the kitchen. The kitchen still got warm, even with all the windows open.
Because 3-101 has a “L” shaped patio, we had some shade during the low afternoon sun. There is a nice, newish planting in the lawn by the patio that is very nice. Be aware that you do not have much of an ocean view from the patio since the unit’s backyard is a sloped lawn and the only straight-on ocean view is the two open spots in the hedge.
The entire unit is feeling the effects of age and the humid climate. The online photos of the unit are not current. It is always annoying when the rental photos don’t match reality. The towels and linens seemed old and worn out.
The biggest problem was outside noise. The construction in these buildings is not super solid and not build to minimize intra-unit noise – running kids and heavy-footed adults at 6am upstairs, loud neighbors in the building next to us, and you can loudly hear people flush toilets. Many times, there were walkers out at 6:30am talking loud on their cellphones when our windows were open for a cooling breeze. Mornings were the worst. But, most units were silent by 9pm and afternoons were very nice.

"Wonderful Condo in Big Island Oceanfront Paradise
These accommodations were quite spacious, with sunlight galore and walls of sliding glass doors opening to a long, wide lanai with a wide view of a huge green lawn, blue sky and the white capped ocean for miles beyond! The location was close to the tennis courts and pool and just a quick walk down to the mostly unpopulated sandy beach at the edge of the property. We hosted Al Fresca dinners of fresh catch barbecued fish for 10-12 friends almost every night. The interior of the condo was clean, with a large, comfortable floor plan and two good sized bedrooms with big closets, plenty of hangers, and two bright and airy tiled baths. The kitchen was well laid out, open to the dining/living rooms and stocked well with spices and sauces. A small desk and chair adjacent to the living room provided space for a laptop we worked and wrote from a bit too. The three of us loved our stay and this college roommate reunion was a great success. Next year we hope to return for another few weeks in Kona’s by the sea Paradise @ the Surf and Racquet Club. "

"Wonderful location for a wonderful vacation
The unit was comfortable and we enjoyed the lanai so much, watching the waves explode in the blowholes and looking for whales (bring binoculars!) Highly recommend this complex and especially this oceanfront unit. "

"Great location
We've visited KKSR many times over the years, though this was our first time in unit 3-101. The location can't be beat - right on the ocean, easy pool/court/BBQ access - close to shopping but far enough away from town so you feel more private. The unit is showing it's age, but it is perfectly comfortable and extremely well-outfitted. Everything from kitchen spices to snorkeling gear is at your fingertips. The many instructions about faucets, blinds, etc felt a bit much but are easy enough to deal with. Will definitely return."

"Great location!
We loved our stay! The location is perfect and you can hear the waves from your lanai. We had no issues at all during our stay! The place had everything we needed (beach chairs, beach towels, boogie boards). The complex area itself is very well maintained. I was concerned about not having an air conditioner but in the evenings we opened up the doors for awhile and it cooled the place down. The ceiling fans helped at night too. No complaints and would definitely stay here again!"

"Great Working Vacation
With the ability to work from anywhere, we combined work with vacation. Between two desks in the dining/living room and fast internet, my wife and I were able to setup our computers, spend the mornings working, and take the afternoons off. The condo is fully loaded with every imaginable kitchen appliance and plenty of cooking utensils. Having the washer/dryer means we could pack less clothes and just do laundry once or twice. And spending the nights falling asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks was very soothing.
Between the oceanfront location and nearby shops/restaurants, the location can't be beat. All in all, we were very happy with our stay and will be back. "

Lanai was amazing place for morning coffee, play games and watch beautiful sunsets. Condo kitchen well stocked and had everything you need for beach day and to play tennis/pickle ball. Had chairs, boogie boards, coolers etc.... Walking to great snorkel beach and stores"

"A satisfied customer!
My family and I had a fantastic stay. We celebrated Thanksgiving Day while we were there. The kitchen was full of all amenities needed to make a traditional thanksgiving dinner. The location of the condo was perfect. We had views, green lawn to walk barefoot on and ground ourselves. Knutson & Associates checked in on us a couple of times to be sure everything was ok. It was! We will visit again! Mahalo!"

"Wonderful stay in a beautiful house with gorgeous views
I highly recommend this vacation home. It has everything you need and more. Excellent location, great views, the house was fully stocked - was pleasantly surprised to find sesame oil among others, so many different spices and other goodies that made the stay even more special. Hearing the waves and enjoying the breeze while sitting in the lanai was one of the highlights of our trip. Also would like to commend the property manager- they were super prompt and helpful."

"Gute Ausgangsbasis für Inselerkundung
Wir hatten eine gute Zeit in dem Apartment. Für uns drei war der Platz genau richtig. Die Aussicht von der Terrasse ist großartig. Nur auf der Liege zu liegen ist schon sehr entspannend! Die Einkaufsmöglichkeiten sind auch zu Fuß zu erreichen. Mülltrennung wird hier ganz groß organisiert.
Schränke waren teilweise voll geräumt: Es gab Lebensmittel zum Aufbrauchen, Sonnencremes usw. Der Platz für mitgebrachte Garderobe war uns zu gering. "

"A lovely location
We loved the location of this vacation rental. They also had a great pool that we often enjoyed swimming in! This rental offered lots of things for us to use. From snorkeling gear, towels, extra sunscreen and boogie boards! That was all really nice. But this place could really use an update!! Not only in decor (which could also use an update). Across the board, It’s very outdated. The entire second bathroom shower didn’t work. The wall behind it was even totally exposed. And having a place with no AC on vacation to a very hot and tropical location was really tough. They definitely disclosed no AC, but somehow we missed that. So it was quite an unpleasant surprise. "

"Breezy and beautiful rooms with a view!
We enjoyed our stay in this property very much. The views from the main rooms and master bedroom were stunning. The condo opens up really well to the outdoors allowing for wonderful breezes to cool the rooms. The location was convenient and the condo was well-supplied with recreational items. The only downside to this unit was noisy upstairs tenants during our stay. Starting very early each
morning, we were awakened by the sound of running, shouting children. While that is no fault of the owners at all, it does put a damper on vacation mornings for renters of a ground-floor unit. Additionally, the master shower was out of commission. We received a slight discount for the inconvenience, but sharing one shower with 4 adults was not ideal. Over all, we greatly enjoyed our stay! "

"Sixteen Nights in Paradise
The property was very clean and exceptionally well stocked. From linens to towels, kitchen utensils, water sports equipment, beach chairs, cooler and icepacks. My husband was able to use their snorkel gear to snorkel a 5 minute walk down the road.
The favorite for all is the outdoor living area with a view that is truly amazing.

"Well appointed unit with a great lanai
This unit was one of the most equipped of any vacation rental I've ever stayed in. From kitchen spices to beach towels and lounge chairs to yoga mats this unit had everything we needed for an amazing Hawaiian vacation! However, the absolute best thing about it is the large wrap around lanai. We drank coffee in the morning watching the kayakers, practiced yoga on the shady side in the afternoon and had cocktails while watching the sunset. I think we spent more time outside than inside. The grounds are beautiful and we enjoyed spending time at the pool and walking to the small rocky beach adjacent to the complex to watch the turtles. "

"Great location and condo
We really enjoyed our stay at this condo. Had everything we needed. Kitchen was well stocked and had more spices and condiments than I have at home. Lots of dishes and glasses, but minimal flatware. So much that there wasn't any room in cupboards for food we bought. Coffee grinder didn't work, stove was temperamental, but everything else was just great. Enjoyed the pool and tennis/pickleball courts, but especially loved the view.

Fabulous! Waking up to that view everyday and sitting on the Lanai was so peaceful. Unit has everything you need, some items could use updated or replaced but still functional. Lia at Knutson & Associates was a gem to work with! She was very patient and much Aloha, will definitely use her with future bookings. Lia even was able to get us a late check out which made our last day stress free!! Mahalo Lia!! "

"Our stay at KS&RC #3-101 June 19-July 13, 2021
Generally our vacation rental experience was great. There were some minor things - the rear door to the lanai, left side facing outside, did not track well and the door handle actually fell off early in the stay. However, the Knutson & Asscts staff were very helpful getting someone to the property to repair the door sufficiently so things were secure and it was functional enough for the balance of our stay. The other item of concern was the kitchen stove which had at least one burner that did not work and other burners that were sporadic.
We found the rest of the facility to be wonderful. The location, which we are very familiar with is great."

"Awesome condo
I got this for my elderly parents, and it was fantastic! They sat on the lanai and enjoyed bird watching, the sunsets and the beautiful view of the ocean. I would highly recommend the place, was well stocked and super comfy. "

"Surf and Racquet Club 3-101
Property description was accurate and we enjoyed the condo very much. The corner unit with sliding glass doors gives an open, airy feel. The layout for our family of 4 was perfect and we were happy to find the sofa had a hide away bed. The kitchen is dated and needs an upgrade. One of the burners on the stove didn't work and there was grease down the side of the fridge but both still useable. The other improvement needed is the ceiling fans. They are old and rusted and squeaked when turned on. We ended up not using the one in the bedroom nor the one in the living room. Luckily there was a floor fan that we used instead. We appreciated the boogie boards, snorkel gear, towels etc. The location is great and the grounds of the condo complex are beautiful and well maintained. Pool and tennis courts were super. There isn't any noise from the road and your not in the congested part of Kona. Overall a great condo for the price. "

"Nice condo but lots of noise from upstairs
The condo was very nice. However, the noise from the condo above started as early as 4:30 AM every day and woke us up. It was mostly walking and chairs screeching. I am not sure if anything could be done to mitigate the noise. I used fans and a sound machine, but could still hear it. The condo was well equipped and clean . KKSRC is in great location and the complex is very nice. The manager, Mervlyn was super nice and helpful. "

Our stay was absolutely fabulous. The ocean view was amazing. The condo is spacious and we were very comfortable. We walked to the beach to see the sea turtles, snorkeled nearby, and used the pool and barbecues nightly. The condo is close to shops and restaurants. We loved On the Rocks. The food was great and Hula dancers performed. During our vacation, we hiked to falls and in the Volcano National Park, snorkeled, did the Manta Ray night snorkel, and kayaked with the dolphins in Cooks Cove. We will definitely be coming back to Kona!"

"Great location
We stayed in unit 3-101, which is a lovely condo overlooking the ocean. It is a corner unit, which gives lanai space on two sides. The glass sliders in the livingroom are great and bring the outdoors inside. I liked the condo floor plan, with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. Kitchen was fairly well supplied (needs a pizza cutter!). The only negative was that the wifi was very erratic, especially toward the end of our stay. We had to reboot the wifi frequently. When it was working, the speed was fine. We enjoyed our stay, especially the sunsets which are always amazing."
