Hanalei Colony Resort I1 is unique among north shore Kauai condo resorts. Recently voted one of Travel + Leisure's top 20 favorite resorts, these vacation rentals are directly on the path to follow, just take a few steps and you're on the sand. And I1 is the closest building, directly on the beach. You can also take advantage of the restaurant and spa onsite, or prepare your own food in your apartment's full kitchen or on the gas grills provided. Pool, jacuzzi and barbecue are conveniently close.
This condo has a large shady lanai that puts you 10 steps from the sand. There are two bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other with two twin beds. Both bedrooms can be closed off from the shared living areas with wooden louver doors that preserve the refreshing airflow while providing visual privacy. Note that sound will still carry, so if you're streaming a late-night movie, be sure to keep the volume low. The living and dining areas are comfortably furnished and there are spectacular beach views from the large picture windows. There's a full bath and a half bath. While there are no televisions or cable television service in the complex, wifi is provided so you won't be completely cut off from the modern world. (Only as cut off as you want to be.)
In addition to Hanalei Colony Resort I1's beautiful interior and views, and the beach just in front, guests can enjoy the swimming pool, jacuzzi, barbecue grills, and guest laundry room. You can walk next door to the Opakapaka Bar and Grill. Also located just across the parking lot is the Hanalei Day Spa. Just ten minutes past the charming town of Hanalei, you'll find that shopping and dining options are conveniently close. It's the perfect Kauai vacation rental for proposals, honeymoons, anniversaries, and other romantic occasions.
While wonderfully furnished and right next to the beach, please know that the development was built in simpler times. The units are smaller and have kitchens to match. Some normal amenities will be absent given the space and purposeful attempt to honor the simplicity of earlier times: you won’t find a dishwasher or washing machine in any of the units (there is a laundry room on the premises), and most units have no televisions (though wifi is available for those of us who can't escape work or want to stream our favorite shows).
As with most homes on Kauai, this vacation rental is NOT air conditioned.
Although this home has internet, the speed and reliability cannot be guaranteed due to the remote location and the service being provided by a third-party.

"Relaxing and beautiful
This was the last part of our trip of five weeks in Hawaii. We started on Oahu and ended up at Kauai. traveled with three of my friends rented a wonderful convertible, soft top Jeep, which was great to explore. The weather does change quite quickly there. It was beautiful, warm and falling asleep to the ocean. There’s nothing better looking forward to spending more days in the future here. We enjoyed cooking in the house and the back deck listening to the ocean was priceless. Easy to get to and everything that we needed."

"Quiet and relaxed
Our visit didn't start so well; the cleaners had not come the day before and we arrived on Easter Sunday. The unit was a mess and there was no one available. Luckily the rental company had an available alternate unit for the night. We were finally able to get into I-1 about 11:30 the next morning, unpack and start our holiday.
The HCR is past Hanalei and is quiet, beautiful and old school. Only two story units. Very chill. The pool / bbq area is great.
Our unit had a pleasant lived-in feeling. It's not new or fancy, but that's not what you go to the north shore for."

"Amazing location, a bit tired interior
One stays at HCR because of its amazing location. This unit TRULY has a phenomenal location for a oceanfront unit! We've stayed at HCR 5 times during the past decade, all the units layout are the same unique layout. Unit I-1 was an interesting mix within that context. PROS: (1) Location, (2) unit very clean (3) bathrooms & kitchen had been partially updated (4) bedding was good quality. CONS: (1) furniture & rug are more tired/worn than other units we've rented (2) room areas that aren't updated, can also be quite worn
Overall - Given this units location --With just updating the sofa, armchair & rug to something comfortable & newer -- this would be unmissable."

"Lower Your Expectations For This Rental
Beautiful location. Must have a "North Kauai Mindset" as it is almost always breezy and probably all most as much rain as the Na Pali range just East of the property. Management company could do a much better job communicating the relationship with the on-site management. Different companies but the company managing this unit has numerous arrangements with the company managing the majority of the other units. This caused a lot of confusion as to who helped with what. Of significance, with all the associated fees, this unit cost us more than $1,000 per night for our 5 night stay. Our expectations were high. They were not met. The unit had numerous issues that did not get resolved during our stay. Two of three kitchen electrical outlets were not functioning (GFI tripped and would not reset...actual outlet was very loose in wall and moved around). Peeling paint on shower bar. A good amount of rust on cabinet hinges and in shower. Two pages of admonishments about laundering the beach and bath towels. Only 3 beach towels provided (with moisture in the air, still damp even though hung up to dry each day). Three beach chairs but only one normal (two were rusted and almost minature...only one still functional...other rusted so badly the legs were broken). Even simple inexpensive things not available. Coffee filters the wrong size for coffee pot. Too small to use. ZERO plastic cups for use at pool. Glassware appeared to be from the 50's. Only a SINGLE wine glass in cupboard. Simply put, NOT worth a $1,000 per night (after fees added) to have no one put a few dollars INTO the unit. This VRBO rental had more wrong with it and less amenities in it than any other I've rented in the last 20 years. Very sad as a few hundred dollars put into the unit would solve almost all the issues. "

"Great Tropical Jungle Feel!
The Hanalei Colony Resort is Really Quite Nice. My Room was a few steps from the Water. I was Careful Not to Wake Up the Sleeping Seals. The Town of Hanalei Bay was about a 20 minute Drive, which has a Wonderful Big Wide Sandy Beach. Caught Many Body Surfing Waves.

"A Relaxing Getaway
If you're looking for the end of the road, this is it! We loved the location even though driving to other locations on the island were sometimes a bit time-consuming. Plenty of sun here throughout our week-long stay. Great location near the beach. Not very swimmable, but loved falling to sleep listening to the waves and watching the sunrise every day. Plenty of other beaches nearby also. The unit was very comfortable, but could use an update or two. Would definitely go back!"

"Just Enjoying the View
If you want an out of the way place to stay with beaqutiful scenery, then this is the place. Staying on the north side of the island gives you beautiful scenery but remember that most places you go there is a drive on curvey and narrow roads but we enjoyed that part. GPS says 37 min. to the airport. Forget that? About and hr and a half to be safe. The small towns are fun and friendly, the island is gorgeous and we would go again. Best food we had was at the restaurant at the condo. Condos are older but nice and arranged so that you almost feel you are there alone. It worked perfect for us as we enjoyed driving the island and seeing the sights."

"Ocean front quiet escape!
Beautiful unit on ground floor, stunning location (we thought it one of the best on the property) with gorgeous view and the constant roar of the ocean. Truly a remote, quiet and relaxing location away from the bustle of the city. We loved the unplugged feel (no tv! but wifi worked great if you can't completely unplug... ;), no air-con but plenty of ocean breeze. We cooked our own meals (local fish on the shared bbq by the pool!) to take advantage of the porch and views, so didn't eat in the on-site restaurant, but did enjoy the convenient coffee stand. Property management was great to work with and we are already planning when we can return. If you're looking for a quiet getaway surrounded by nature and scenery, this is the place. "

"Relaxing Vacation Condo
My husband, two teen daughters and I loved our stay here and would definitely come back again. The layout is perfect in that it feels open with the best ocean views, yet teens and adults each had own space. We found it super relaxing here and watched the sunrise each morning. Ate dinner in the restaurant on site every night, and blended coffee drinks every afternoon. Got a few staples at the Wainiha Market on the way to the Resort. The breeze coming through the unit kept us cool enough. Management was very responsive. There was noise from above on the last night - a young family arrived that day. The ocean is beautiful to look out at, but you'll want to go to other beaches for swimming."

"The experience ends at the view
It's as simple as they've let this unit get run down and the pictures do not convey how bad things are. I've never been in a VBRO situation like this and am sadly wanting to make sure no one else is either. The view in the photos will sell you, but 1) you cannot use the beach because of the currents 2) the condition of the unit is beyond deplorable ... for example, black mold in the the bathroom shower, weird green growth on all of the silver towel racks in the bathroom(s), every single lamp is beyond rusted and dusty, the rug has disgusting stains, the master bed is sunk in the middle, the wood slats for the windows are covered in aged wood/dust and don't work, the wooden dividers throughout the unit and dirty beyond imagination and they don't work well at all, the closest has very dated supplies to use, the 2nd bedroom curtains are stained, the kitchen will blow your mind how rusted out it is - that's an island thing they told us - but this unit is clearly past it's time to be updated - the wood cabinets are ancient but that's ok and totally tolerable compared to the rest of the unit. We spoke to the management company and they gave us a credit for 1/2 a day and said this is how things are in the islands. Well, that's just downright sad when it's a hard-earned vacation that you planned for years. I would pass on this unit until they have confirmed it's been remodeled. "

"Most wonderful location on the island, but...
This is our 25th year staying at Hanalei Colony Resort and this time we came with our son and 4 year-old grandson. The unit is one we stayed in when our kids were young and it is one of our favorites! Hanalei Colony Resort in general is heaven on earth for those who love the ocean and peace and friendly people. This unit is the best location in the complex with truly amazing views of the ocean and beach. We couldn't ask for more...except there was a lot of deferred maintenance on the unit that might disappoint other potential guests. While my family is low-key about broken sliding screens, slider doors that don't open, window slats that are rusted open, grimy shower tile and other little signs of benign neglect that easily happen in the salt-heavy ocean-front setting, if someone is looking for the unit to be updated and working 100% then you may consider another unit in the building. As I said, our family will rent this again but I know we have many friends who wouldn't like those things. Also, this is rented through VRBO and we didn't realize that meant we couldn't use the complex's complimentary shuttle to beaches and town, nor get fresh towels and beach towels each morning. For us that we a little bit off-putting as we love the Aloha spirit of Hanalei Colony Resort's staff and always swapped out our towels to get clean beach towels in the past. All in all, this is the most beautiful setting on the north shore and the view is incredible and we will stay here again, but I hope that the condo gets a little TLC in the meantime."

"Beautiful location in a unit that needs major updates
The location of Hanalei Colony Resort is stunning. It's an easy 10 minute drive from Hanalei town in a quiet area. The views from the unit can't be beat as you are right on the water. We also loved the convenience of the restaurant and coffee shop on site. The unit itself needs some major updates. The cleaning crew did a great job cleaning what they could, however, there are things that just need replacing. The refrigerator is covered in orange rust. The curtains and window treatments look moldy. A lot of the doors/cabinets are coming off the hinges. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but I expected more from the unit."

"Steps to Quiet Beach
Overall, the rental unit was as we had hoped. The proximity to the beach was Perfect for us. The space was roomy and the view Incredible.
We were glad to have a very clean bathroom.
The not so pleasant: There were broken screens on the front and sliding doors when we arrived, but these were repaired while we were out, one day. The area floor rug needs to be discarded. It is full of mold and stains. The seat cushions on the loveseat had moldy spots also. We threw a cover over it so we could use it. We have to agree with other renters that the condition of the kitchen refrigerator on one side is unsightly to say the least. While it did not deter us from using the kitchen or enjoying the unit, overall, it is not expected in the price paid. The master bedroom slats on the window shutters were thick with dust buildup that we had to clean. This was unavoidable since the shutters were opened and closed for ventilation.
A bit more care to the condition could make this a 5-star rental unit. "

"A Little Bit of Paradise
Wonderful stay at Hanalei Colony Resort. So peaceful and the condo we rented was fairly private with a fantastic view. Nicely decorated, only wish it had a few more basics (e.g., salt & pepper, cooking oil, etc.). It's an older condo so a bit of maintenance/updating would be nice but otherwise a perfect place to plant ourselves while on the north shore!"

Responsive property manger, great location and views. The interior thou has seen better days and is very old. For the price point you would expect better maintenance. The exterior the property is very well maintained.
Fly wire on the deck door was broken, deck chair leg was broken. The doors on the deck wouldn’t slide very well, they seemed they would fall off if used too much. There was a mild old musty smell. "

"Beautiful location but outdated property
The entire facility was very outdated and in need of some repair. When we arrived, there was no smoke alarm, coffee pot and the porch light was dangling by a wire. The entire hotel was quite run down and it is worth pointing out that the location gets very windy!! That said, it is quiet and peaceful out there on that point and you are close to fabulous beaches like Tunnels. "

Great location, right on the beach. Great beach for walking. The unit is a little dated but very functional. The property grounds were well-kept. The biggest downside for us was the inability to use the on-site washer/dryer and the difficulty accessing the hiking trail at the end of the road (shuttle tickets extremely limited)."

"Away From It All
This vacation rental is older, with some updates. The view of the ocean from the lanai is beautiful! The grounds are well kept and the beach is steps away. There is good snorkeling at the nearby beach. A few things to keep in mind are that you are a 15-min drive from Hanalei (closest shops, restaurants, etc). The pool and laundry facilities are not operating due to the 2018 flood. This area gets a lot of rain and beaches are not as calm as south shore. That being said, it was very peaceful and you are away from all the tourism out here. Management company was great to work with, and responsive to questions/needs."
