Hanalei Colony Resort J3 is a tranquil, off-the-beaten-path retreat on Kaua'i's far North Shore, perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape surrounded by natural beauty! This charming, vintage-style condo features two bedrooms, with the option to use the second bedroom to sleep a third guest or as a remote office, a fully appointed kitchen, and a light-filled living and dining area that opens to breathtaking ocean views. You'll find another sleeper sofa in the living room, allowing you to comfortably accommodate up to four guests. The shaded balcony lanai offers outdoor seating for 2, and the perfect spot to take in an island sunrise with your morning coffee! Please note, the bedrooms are separated from the main living space by sliding shoji screens, offering visual privacy but not soundproofing.
The amenities at Hanalei Colony Resort make this the perfect spot for a slow-paced vacation. Walk just a few steps and you're right on a warm, sandy beach away from any crowds! You can walk along the golden sands until you come to the end of the road at Ke'e Beach, or you can spend a day by the pool and hot tub, lounging in the sun and grilling in the outdoor kitchen. If you need to truly unwind and pamper yourself, the Hanalei Day Spa is just across the parking lot and offers some incredible services (can you say beachside couple's massage?). You'll also find the Opakapaka grill & bar on site for some tasty seaside bites, as well as the Na Pali Art Gallery & Coffee Shop where you can peruse beautiful local art and jewelry while enjoying a morning brew.
For those of us that like to get out and about, Hanalei Colony Resort is still close to many attractions. Take a quick 15 minute drive and you're in the heart of Hanalei town, with its charming boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. Grab a bite to eat or a shave ice before heading to the iconic beaches of Hanalei Bay for the day. Tunnels Beach, perfect for snorkeling, is only 3 minutes away driving, or 20 minutes on foot if you prefer to hoof it. Ha'ena Beach is just another 3 minutes down the road, and is a hidden gem with pristine waters and incredible sunsets. You're also just 10 minutes away from the Limahuli Gardens & Preserve, which offer an introduction into native Hawaiian culture and its ties to the natural landscape, against a backdrop of dramatic mountains and the Pacific Ocean. For any basic grocery needs, as well as delicious sandwiches, acai bowls, coffee, and shave ice, head 3 minutes down the road to the Wainiha Country Market. You'll also find a lovely selection of local goodies you won't be able to resist!
Please note that Hanalei Colony Resort was built in simpler times in a more remote location. The resort was designed with the untouched environment as the main draw, and does not offer all the luxuries of modern resorts. There is no dishwasher and no TV in the unit (although there is Wi-Fi), and it takes longer to access the rest of the island. Drive time to Princeville and Kilauea is roughly 30 minutes, to the East Side (where the airport is) is 70 minutes, and to the South Shore is over 90 minutes. We highly recommend renting a car, as third party guests are unfortunately NOT able to use the resort shuttle services. We do, however, encourage guests to take advantage of the North Shore Shuttle, which services locations such as the Wainiha Country Market, Limahuli Gardens, and Ha'ena State Park. The shuttle will pick you up right in the parking lot of Hanalei Colony Resort (super convenient!), and advance reservations are required.
This is an upstairs unit. You must be able to go up and down 2.5 flights of stairs (roughly 25 steps) to access the unit. There are no elevators.
As with most homes on Kauai, this vacation rental is NOT air conditioned, however there are ceiling fans in each space to help with air flow.
Although this home has internet, the speed and reliability cannot be guaranteed due to the remote location and the service being provided by a third-party.

"j3 unit review
we have stayed many times at this location (hanalei colony). we have been going to the location for 25 years. the sink was dirty, under the sink was dirty. the shower doesn’t drain well. the construction outside (right next to our window) started before 8 each day. they were rebuilding the landing. "

"Wind in Our Hair!
We loved this open-air unit on the North Shore. It was well-equipped with all the beach items one would need as well as many kitchen necessities. The bed was soft and the the bathrooms clean. The room is so light and bright, and it was a great spot to watch those colorful sunrises!
Please note that the beach directly in front of the place is not a "swimmable" beach with lots of rocks and strong waves. However, you can get wet to your ankles, if you choose. :) But the pool, hot tub, outdoor kitchen, and garden area is quite lovely.
It's all about location when on vacation, and this was a great spot to access the Napali Coast for hiking and beaching it, and go to Hanalei for food and essentials.
We had read reviews about it being outdated, but I don't think so. It's what we imagine Hawaii should be. We didn't miss the TV or air conditioning at all and our Wifi was fine.
I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a great place to rest and a more authentic Hawaiian experience."

"Great stay and location
Great stay, amazing location. All the negative previous reviews have been addressed. Furniture updated, well equipped kitchen, comfy bed and linen. Property staff was friendly.
As clearly stated- no tv and no a/c. It’s important to know, but there is always a breeze. There is a free shuttle not available to you since the unit is not managed by the insight manager.
Unit is set back on the water, so review the map if you are arriving at night (we wandered around for a long time very late at night)
Overall, great stay and would love to go back again.

"Superb stay!
We had the most wonderful vacation and stay at Hanalei Colony! It has everything you need without having to go anywhere, yet close to Hanalei bay and tunnels. The pool must have been recently done because the facility was so clean, new and my kids loved taking a beach break and swimming here! We especially loved the resort cat, Leo, who greeted us and gave my kids some love while missing their animals at home. We will rent here every summer in the future!"

"Amazing Ocean Front Views!
A perfect little gem on the North Shore of Kauai. Couldn't ask for a better setting or view. Very well equipped with everything you need to cook etc. There is no TV which was fine with us as the view was mesmerizing and we wouldn't have turned it on anyway as the sound of the waves was beautiful. If you are expecting a 5 star hotel like decor this isn't it. The unit is a bit dated, in great condition but dated. The bed was comfy and everything works. That didn't bother us as we spend most of our time on the ocean front balcony. "

"Great locale w some updating needs
The second floor, Waterview unit is in a wonderful location on the island and amenities on the grounds, such as a decent restaurant, and a wonderful little pool and hot tub make it a great place to stay. There are just a few things that keep it from being awesome, including dull knives and Windows that haven’t been cleaned or are so covered in salt that it spoils the view. I would still totally recommend it but if you’re looking for 5 star, this isn’t it."

"J3 beautiful location but condo needs updated
While the location is amazing the main bed was not comfortable and didn’t have sheets that fit - we contacted Kauai kahuna and they had house keeping bring in sheets that were the size needed. All towels were old and most stained. The kitchen was so cluttered there wasn’t room for our food, I re-organized to make some room but felt they could clean out about half of the small appliances and old gadgets to make space for people to settle in. On a positive it was a very clean unit and decorated nicely. The location couldn’t be better."

"Clean quiet condo, lovely setting
J3 is a second floor apartment with a view of the ocean and the sunrise. It has constant trade winds and the sound of the surf. The resort is low key, quiet, safe and has basic amenities. The staff at the office and at the on site restaurant were very friendly and helpful. Parking is easy and secure. The location is what makes it so amazing - you are near several gorgeous beaches and minutes from Hanalei. I gave it four stars on condition of property just because there were a couple of small items that need to be addressed. "

"Wonderful North Shore Getaway
We really enjoyed our stay in this wonderful condo adjacent to the beach. We loved the secluded, away-from-the-hub-bub Hanalei Colony resort reminding us of the old Hawaii. Highly recommended for couples, families, anyone needing a restful vacation in an idyllic garden spot. The only reason we did not give this 5 stars was due to the unit not being cleaned and ready upon our checkin ... however, the property manager quickly apologized, rectified the situation, and compensated us for the delay."

Beautiful private feeling beach and lovely lodging. The massages on-site are pricey but great and a nice smoothie spot right down the road. Great location for north shore adventures and unbeatable views and beach access from the door. Will be back! "

"Overwhelmed by the Ocean
We had a wonderful week. Love the ocean views and the proximity to the small beach, Kepuhi. Highly recommend the nearby Limahuli botanical gardens. The condo is well-equipped. (Some tiny issues with the bedside lamps and the curtains to the lanai. These are minor.) Came home with mild Covid, probably from our one night at a bar in Hanalei. Get vaxed and wear your mask. "

Excellent location on the beach with more beaches close. The resort pool, hot tub, BBQs and pool facilities is new and lovely. Our suite was quite comfortable and roomy for 4 people. We would definitely stay there again."
