Apr 08, 2025 - Michael O., Danville, VA "Ridge Top Retreat (#50) Mismanagement by Elk Springs Resorts My wife and I Rented Ridge Top Retreat (#50) for both of our 60th birthdays to spend time enjoying the cabin and the view. the cabin has a lower-level bedroom with upper-level main floor kitchen and Livingroom. the cabin has a separate lower and upper-level air conditioner whereas the upper-level air conditioner did not work and the lower-level air conditioner could not support the lower-level without help from the other unit. the average temp for the week was 92-degrees. Elk Springs management told us each day that tomorrow the unit would be fixed. the air unit never got fixed. they offered to move us to a ground location (no view) 30-minutes away to a dated cabin in that was pet friendly (my wife has bad pet allergies) not to mention that we would loose a day by moving. there was no attempt to make things right, and each text from them got nastier as I asked for the air to get fixed. the cabin was too hot to enjoy during the day and barely tolerable during the evening. bees constantly swarmed the deck so we couldn't spend time out there. it's a shame (poor management) because the cabins are very nice and in a beautiful quiet location. I probably took 50 pictures of the same thing, and I live on the ocean in Florida, this was as nice or nicer. We had a little issue with hornets on the patio and a thermostat that was forcing heat in the lower level. I contacted the office and they sent someone over within an hour and the thermostat was replaced and the hornets nest was destroyed. They were fantastic. Nothing bad to say once that was completed. We love having access to a pool which is definitely a bonus after a day of hiking and golfing. While the cabin is located near other cabins, privacy and noise was not a problem. We barely had supplies to start. We were there from Sunday to Friday and they gave us one roll of paper towels & one roll of toilet paper in the bottom bath and 1/2 roll in the top bath. We were warned of just getting a starter but I didn’t think it would be that little! Our biggest concern was the security. The resort itself didn’t have security that patrolled and there was issues with a drunk person from another cabin. Our cabin itself only had the deadbolt that worked with a passcode. No other lock on the door. I’ve never went to a cabin that didn’t have the personal padlock without that code you could lock from the inside. Like I said personal preference of things I would change. We loved sitting out on the deck every morning and drinking our coffee so overall it was nice for 2 people. The cabin was very clean with the exception of the carpet. I know it’s hard to maintain carpet but it was very sketchy in the high traffic areas. It was very dirty looking. Also was disappointed with the lack of hot water. We found out quickly that 2 people could not get showers in the morning because the hot water ran out fairly quickly. We would have to wait in between our showers so we each had hot water. Also I was disappointed in the jetted tub in the master bathroom. The instructions said to fill with water over the jets before turning them on, however the water coming out of the faucet would be all cold water before the tub got full enough to turn on the jets. No one wants to take a cold bath! Even then the jets would keep cutting off and wouldn’t stay running. Oh well we still had a nice time during our week there. We spent little time in our cabin anyways and spent more time out enjoying the area. So overall this cabin was nice and I would stay there again in the future! There are 2 issues that made the experience less enjoyable. The biggest issue is their beds. The mattress is HORRIBLE! It was so hard & had no support. It was either a VERY cheap mattress or an EXTREMELY old one. I cannot stress enough that the mattress should be replaced immediately. This is the main reason I would have second thoughts about staying at this cabin. It detracted from the experience. The second issue is the hot tub cycled in the evening until about 11:00 & made a very loud noise every 10 minutes. This did not help when trying to sleep. There was no way to shut the hot tub off to stop this noise unfortunately. It would be nice if there was an option when booking if you do not plan to use the hot tub & have it off/drained. Overall the cabin itself is excellent & the view is beautiful. I strongly recommend that the rental company replace the mattress immediately." Everything functioned properly, including the jacuzzi and hot tub. I will admit that the loud generators outside did run all times of the night, which could be annoying to most people; however, me and my S/O didn't find it to impossible to get a decent nights rest. Towards the end of our stay, after we turned the heat up (because it was way too cold), me and my s/o noticed several lady bugs making some appearances. I'm not quite sure where they were coming from, and typically lady bugs could be seen as a sign of good luck. I wasn't too concerned since they are the least harmful bug. My only real concern would be ensuring that other bugs are not able to get in. To which, we saw no other bugs. Overall, our stay was impeccable, and we had no issues reaching out to Beth for any questions/assistance. This system ran day and night, It droved us crazy. It would come on for a minute, then stop, then come on again. We even sleep with a fan at night, but could still heard the noise. I had the TV as loud as it would go, and we could still hear the pumps running. We called and complained after the first night, Someone from the management co. said they will send someone out to look at it. We didn't hear back from anyone. By the second morning, I couldn't stand it anymore, we were getting no sleep. Again, I called the management co. and she said we will have someone come out. I requested to be moved to another cabin, this was at 8 am, I was told this could be done, but again we never heard from management co.We were looking for a quiet getaway, but this was not it. The cabin was one of the best we have ever stayed in, too bad we didn't get any sleep the whole time we were there. We also reported a roof leak during a storm, but again no one got back to us." I reached there late night and wanted to have a coffee, the coffee maker is there but there are no complimentary coffee amenities, even small hotels like Quality Inn provides complimentary coffee. Second thing the dishes were not cleaned properly, as soon as we started cooking in the pan, the oil started turning into soap bubbles. Thank god i realized it was soap bubbles and stopped cooking otherwise we would have continued cooking like that would have eaten soap. Another thing were your remarks/posts everywhere that any damages would be charged to your card, near the toilet seat, at the diniing area, this didnt gave me a pleasant experience, hope you could avoid those notes and try making the stay pleasant. The last thing was the annoying noise in the bedroom coming from the water pumps below your cabin, it definitely disturbs your sleep. Maintenance did came to look into this noise concern, but unfortunately could not do much. All together the resort was awesome but would never go with elk spring, but with a different vendor." There were a few areas of improvement the molding around the bathtub and shower needed to be redone and the hot tub light needed to be fixed (not a major issue but I did forget to mention it). The internet did go out while we were there and the router had to be replaced and they did it quickly and promptly. The toilet handle was mentioned it was worn out as the maintenance said, hopefully it will be taken care of. The wall near the hot tub needs to be replaced and maybe a wall added to the other side just for a little bit more privacy as we could see our neighbors in the hot tub from our view. The main living room area was our main concern. The outdated electric fireplace is a waste of space and is almost a mood-killer. The couch itself is ready for replacement, the cushions sink down to the bottom as the springs seem to be dead. The lower level HVAC system is loud at night, resonates, and when cycling, makes a sound like a water faucet being turned on for a short period. And the microwave turntable does not turn, which ruined a couple of things we cooked in it. But yes, the view is 100% real and breathtaking, the hot tub was great, and the road was scraped and iced very quickly after the snowfall."
